In their freshman year, three members of the MHS Class of 1987 were allowed to skip the freshman-level class of Earth Science and take Biology instead. Unfortunately, two of those students apparently did not perform well enough in Biology and had to take Earth Science the following semester, the two OLD people in a class with (gack) freshmen!
As one of those, uhm, fortunate students who got to take Biology with those sophomores from the Class of 1986, my photo references for the Biology trip to Maywoods does not have much relevance to the Class of 1987 as only one other member of that class is in these photos, so the images in this gallery will be limited more to Maywoods itself. Incidentally, these images are scanned from 35mm slides taken with 100 speed film.

Crossing the levee and heading back to the Lodge after the big hike
![]() Taking water samples at Edmenston Lake. That's Peggy Lin to the right with the test tubes; that's Mark Reffett of the Class of 1986 with the open shirt. Can't recall who the other people were in our group...... | ![]() The "parking lot" in front of Maywoods. Not entirely sure what was going on here, except that I think that it involved someone running out of those woods across from the Lodge. |

The big hike through the Woods of Maywoods.
| So where in the Kentucky is Maywoods? Is your memory of the trip one of sitting in that old EKU bus, going through scenic Paint Lick and then down some creepy country road while leaving massive trail of dust behind, then traveling down a perilous and winding gravel road until the gates of Maywoods mysteriously appeared? It's almost as if the higher powers didn't want us to know the location of Maywoods, just in case they felt the need to leave any of us behind. Through the magic of the internet (and Google Earth), we have pinpointed what we believe to be the location of Maywoods. In the center of the image to the right, that dark blob appears to be in the same shape as Edmenston Lake, the body of water next to Maywoods Lodge. While the resolution isn't the best (rural Kentucky isn't well represented in these aerial shots), you can make out the levee, the Lodge area, and the winding road leading to the area. |
