Yep, pretty much the same exasperated look …

Then and Now #4: The T.V. Circle

When driving into Model Lab School, once you passed the baseball field, you would make a right turn and either veer left and enter the main parking lot near the high school wing (and also approach the gymnasium) or you could veer right and that road would take you to the “T.V. Circle” … the road would then loop around and take you back in the same direction that you came.  The Circle was so nicknamed because, in the 1960s and 70s, the EKU television studio and radio station were located in this spur of the Donovan Building, known as the Donovan Annex.  There was once a huge rolling door at the end of the building that linked to the circle.  This was one of two pickup and dropoff areas for elementary students.  Then in 1980 they moved the T.V. studio and radio station to a more modern facility in the brand-new Perkins building and the annex remained empty and abandoned for several years until it was refurbished and remodeled and now it contains the offices of the Department of Mass Communications as well as The Eastern Progress, the student newspaper.

The TV Circle and the Field (where there USED to be a tree)

Tree Stump Near the T.V. CircleI shot the above photo on June 4, 2010, in an attempt to match the photo from 1977; this proved to be a bit of a challenge in finding the exact spot because the tree, a significant reference point, is no longer there, although I did find the stump where the tree once stood (pictured to the right).  There are a number of changes that have taken place over the past 33 years.  The sign in the center of the circle is gone (but the frame still stands, for some reason).  The bushes surrounding the sign, oftentimes used by kids as a fort, have been uprooted.  The field in the background, once the site for field day activities, has been replaced by an enormous baseball field.  Interestingly, the white house seen in the center of the photo from 1977 is still there in 2010, looking exactly the same.

Here’s the other side of the T.V. Circle in 2010, so you can get the complete picture.

Image(s) of the Week for 06-14-10 / Then and Now #3: The EKU Bypass

This particular Image of the Week was 38 years in the making.  The top photo is of the EKU Bypass in Richmond, KY sometime in the early spring of 1972:

IotW 06-14-10: EKU Bypass, 1972/2010

The bottom photo is of the EKU Bypass, in almost the exact same spot, on June 4, 2010.

How things have changed.  Denser foliage notwithstanding (it might be interesting to see how things look in the fall or winter when all of the leaves are gone), some original landmarks are still present in the 2010 shot: In addition to the water tower and Commonwealth Hall (the tower), you can still barely see the top of Alumni Coliseum to the right of Commonwealth Hall and the topmost part of the Begley Building/Roy Kidd Stadium on the far righthand side.  The only original building from the 1972 photo that is present in the 2010 photo is the old Richmond Bank building, the brown building on the righthand side in 1972, and just barely visible behind the Speedway sign in 2010.  The original three posts that held the Frisch’s sign still appear to be present in 2010.  The entire lefthand side of the road has been developed, and there are a lot more utility poles, street lights, and a traffic signal in 2010 than there were in 1972.

One of my goals when I visited Richmond on Friday, June 4 of this year was to get this shot.

Then and Now #2: The Second Floor of the H.S. Wing

Presented for your consideration: The second floor of the Model Laboratory School High School wing, circa late October or early November, 1983.  Sarah W. and Peggy L. at their lockers after school (This photo was recently featured in Tri-X Files Episode #1).

And here is the exact same hallway, as of the morning of Friday, June 4, 2010 …

(I have placed a Creative Commons on this image so that non-Flickr “friends” can access the larger images)

I attempted to stand in the exact same spot, almost 26 years later, to take this comparison shot (probably should have taken one more step).  Obviously, the lockers have been replaced after all these years, but it is interesting to note that they have all become half lockers.  And it is reassuring to see that the hole in the ceiling in 1983 was eventually repaired.

Rotating 180 degrees, one will find themselves facing the stairwell on this side of the high school wing.  Here is the corner (with Tanya W.) as photographed on January 5, 1984 (and featured in Tri-X Files #6):

And here is the same corner (although without Tanya) as photographed on June 4, 2010:

Amazingly, about the same, with the sole exception of the paint job on the heater.  And yes, I took the above photo for the sole purpose of doing this blog entry.

Then and Now #1: Doors and Desks

Then and Now — a comparison of how things were in the past with how they are in the present. Or, more accurately, I got a photo in The Archives of a scene from the past; lemme see if I can get a shot of the same thing today.

Compare and contrast: The EKU Library computer terminal section circa 1981, and the same area in June of 2009 …

Computer Nerds! EKU Library - Former PDP/VAX Terminal Section

I was intentionally trying to duplicate the angle of the shot from 1981 in my shot from 2009, but I probably needed to get a little lower … anyway, you can still see the glass partition as well as the doors in the upper right hand corner of both shots leading to what was the Circulation room (now some sort of study hall/archive/fancy atrium). Oh, but the many hours spent in front of those old PDP/VAX terminals, goofing around on MOD and the “2,2″ account with all the games as well as piddling around in our own BASIC-enabled accounts (where we were allocated 15 “blocks” of space) … and how the unwritten policy was that us Model kids could use those terminals as long as no EKU students were waiting for one, and then we had to vacate so that those older students could do their all-important schoolwork.  Unfair!  Nowadays, all of the internet-equipped computers are located in the lobby of the new “addition” to the library; the corner where the computers used to be is now a desk storage area:

Compare and contrast: The Model Lab School Middle School Wing - Side Doors

MS Doors Model Lab School Middle School Wing - Side Doors

The photo on the left was taken in October of 1978; the photo on the right was taken in June of 2009 (almost 30 years apart). Note the most significant change is the addition of the handicapped switch to the door; it’s installation may have resulted in the transplantation of the bush seen so prominently in the foreground of the image from 1978 (right where the switch would be). The bushes are still there in 2009 (as seen in the lower righthand corner of that image) but they have are further away from the door.

To put it all in perspective, here is a wider shot of the door and sidewalk, from the Model Now! 2009 Addendum:

And before you ask: Yes, the photos used in this post were intentionally shot in June of 2009 for the purpose of appearing in this post.
