1988-89 Mr. StephensBand membership had a considerable dropoff this year, due to the departure of six seniors from the previous year and, more significantly, the re-integration of eighth graders into the Advanced Middle School Band, leaving a considerably smaller incoming class of middle schoolers into the high school band. Year seven would continue to be like any other year; Mr. Stephens had become somewhat of an expert in adapting to adverse band lineups.

This particular band would have some of the tightest individual sections. The flute and trumpet sections remained quite large, with many of these players having performed together for a number of years. The clarinet section, while consisting entirely of three freshmen, had been playing together since Intermediate Band.

Dawn Bates conquered the high school band this year, starting with an appointment to Drum Major, directing the last song of the last concert of the year, and sharing the Sousa Award with Sebastian Odong-Wodolam. 1987 co-Sousa Award winner Joe Ballew returned to guest conduct a piece with the Sixth Grade Band at the Spring 1989 concert.
