Band membership topped off at 43 members this year, making year six the largest band class in Allan D. Stephens history. The increase in membership was due to the elimination of eighth graders from the Advanced Middle School Band, and so all eighth grade band members were merged into the High School Band (or, technically, the Symphonic Band). Several new band members who were not freshmen or eighth graders made their debut as well, including Dawn Bates (a Madison Central transfer who quickly ascended to first chair flute), Dana Ackerman and Andy Mercer. An interesting addition, if only for the fall semester, was Ellen Mitchell on cello.
Meena Mohanty was appointed Drum Major, making her the first female drum major in the Allan D. Stephens era. Shay Quillen once again won the position of Band President, as well as the Sousa Award at the end of the year. Shay Quillen, Pam Turner, Brent Murray, Carla Gover, Chris Staples and Josh Meckler made All-Regional Band (which was held in Richmond this year), and Josh Meckler and Carla Gover also made it into All-State Band. Josh Meckler was accepted into the University of Michigan School of Music, making history as the youngest person to be accepted to the school.
Mr. and Mrs. Stephens, Susan Stephens, Mischa Blair, Boris Ebbing, Andy Mercer, Shay Quillen, Meena Mohantu, Carla Gover, Stacey Hubbs and Ellen Mitchell made the journey to Chicago, Illinois in December of 1987 to attend Tuba Christmas and run amuck in the Windy City.
