But the 1984-1985 school year also brought some fairly familiar faces back to the band -- Dawn Quillen and Jonathan Leung had all played in the middle school band at some point. Also among the new faces were two newcomers to their instruments -- Peggy Lin on oboe and Chris Staples on drums. For the spring semester, Mr. Stephens recruited heavily into the middle school band and brought five eighth graders into the big leagues. Joe Ballew moved from trumpet to baritone, as well as being appointed drum major, with the departure of Lance Francis. Sarah Warner was elected band president. And on a completely different topic, band members' names were now listed on the back of the programs, making our research a whole lot easier (and we do not have to rely on a continually error-ridden yearbook for our roster information). Peggy Lin and Jimmy Kwak contributed articles about the band to The Observer for the fall semester of 1985, but, for whatever reason, did not write anything about the band in the spring of 1986 (suggesting that The Observer was no longer amused with the antics of the band). Regardless, these articles serve as some of the best documentation of the events of that semester.

![]() New hats! New drum major uniform! Same goofy expressions! | ![]() Either Mr. Stephens is about to adjust Jimmy Kwak's bow tie or he is going to strangle him for all those times he was out of step. | ![]() The tri-corner hats were so new, the band members never took them out of the plastic! Actually, they were wrapped in plastic to keep them out of the occasional rain that occurred that afternoon. |
EKU Homecoming, October 1985
| The band's final marching appearance for the year was at the Richmond Chamber of Commerce Holiday Parade. The parade was broadcast live on Centel cable's local access channel. The Model band's footage can be seen here or in our Videos section. |
![]() With the Winter Concert of 1985 came the traditional "goodies in the library" reception. Here we see Mrs. Mary Lou Stephens in what would become her annual role of punch server, along with thirsty middle schoolers Jim Washabaugh and Brian Fardo. | |
![]() Pep Band, December 1985 | ![]() When there was some free time in band class, many band members would wander into the auditorium and bang on (excuse us, play on) the piano and sing/croon/warble/vocalize. Usually tickling the ivories were William Hill or Bert Thomas. Pictured here are Mischa Blair, Sebastain Odong-Wodolam, Meena Mohanty and Stephen Jett reacting to Shay Quillen's impassioned performance. Aaron Francis is obscured behind Shay, in the MTV jacket. |

| The Model High School Talent Show, held in the spring of 1986, featured a performance by The Hungry "5", consisting of Shay Quillen and Jimmy Kwak on clarinet, Stephen Jett on cornet, Josh Meckler on trombone, and Mr. Stephens on tuba (filling in for Kurt Adams who had fallen ill at the time). The quintet performed German oom-pah-pah/drinking songs and told really corny jokes before a relatively obnoxious crowd. Here is an mp3 file of the last song performed in the set: "Bier Hier Bier Hier (Come On with the Beer)" (1:42, mp3) The complete performance is available in the AUDIO section. |

Mr. Stephens and Susan Stephens, February 1986

On April 8-12, 1986, members of the Model High School Band participated in a band exchange with Jefferson High School of Monroe, Michigan by making the journey up north to southern Michigan (the JHS band would reciprocate in the fall of 1986). Staying with host families (except for Sarah Warner and Melissa Bowling, who somehow got to stay at the Knight's Inn), the band members toured the area, sat in on classes at JHS, performed a joint concert with the JHS Concert and Symphonic Bands, and spent a day at Greenfield Village and the Henry Ford Museum. The band members participating (seen here outside of Jefferson High School) were:
Kneeling (L-R): Meena Mohanty, Dawn Quillen, Ranjan Mohanty
Standing (L-R): Peggy Lin, Jonathan Leung, Pam Turner (obscured), Denny French, Joe Ballew, Stephen Jett, Aaron Francis, Sebastian Odong, Chris Staples, Shay Quillen, Mischa Blair, Jimmy Kwak, Bert Thomas, Sarah Warner, Keith Hartman, Melissa Bowling, Jeff Kuhnhenn, Brent Murray, Mark Felder (JHS Band Director), Josh Meckler, Allan D. Stephens
Band members visit Lake Erie in ridiculously cold weather. Peggy Lin takes a wade in the lake.

The band directors get their corsages pinned on prior to the joint MHS-JHS concert, courtesy of the other band's representative. Sarah Warner -- MHS Band President -- attaches Mr. Felder's corsage, while Michelle (we cannot recall her last name) -- the JHS drum major, Shay Quillen's host student, and the tallest female in the band -- takes care of Mr. Stephens.
The only two photos in existence of the MHS-JHS Concert, as the father of Jimmy Kwak's host family accidentally exposed all of the film after the performance. On the left, the MHS band members assemble in the bleachers (the concert was held in the JHS gymnasium) as the JHS Concert Band prepares to perform. On the right, the JHS Concert Band.
