* Joined in the spring semester

*** Left during the fall semester but returned in the spring semester

**** Bert Thomas also doubled up on the Alto Horn in the spring semester

1986 Mr. StephensYear four began with the departure of five band members who had only joined the band the year before, and a couple of longtime band members left as well. The entire saxophone section from the previous year was obliterated in the fall semester. A few departing band members left not necessarily due to the fact that they did not want to be in the band, but because of class schedules (because not every band member scheduled their classes around band, although there were some that certainly did). One of the biggest competitors for band class was Driver's Education, which oftentimes would claim a band member for a semester.

But the 1984-1985 school year also brought some fairly familiar faces back to the band -- Dawn Quillen and Jonathan Leung had all played in the middle school band at some point. Also among the new faces were two newcomers to their instruments -- Peggy Lin on oboe and Chris Staples on drums. For the spring semester, Mr. Stephens recruited heavily into the middle school band and brought five eighth graders into the big leagues. Joe Ballew moved from trumpet to baritone, as well as being appointed drum major, with the departure of Lance Francis. Sarah Warner was elected band president.

And on a completely different topic, band members' names were now listed on the back of the programs, making our research a whole lot easier (and we do not have to rely on a continually error-ridden yearbook for our roster information).

Peggy Lin and Jimmy Kwak contributed articles about the band to The Observer for the fall semester of 1985, but, for whatever reason, did not write anything about the band in the spring of 1986 (suggesting that The Observer was no longer amused with the antics of the band). Regardless, these articles serve as some of the best documentation of the events of that semester.

1985-86 Yearbook
Group photo from the 1985-86 yearbook. The infamous "informal" group shot, taken as a result of Mr. Stephens not being present to organize things. The yearbook itself is incorrect on some of the names, so here are the real ones:
Front row: Jimmy Kwak, Mischa Blair, Carla Gover, Willie Gump, Pam Turner, Dawn Quillen, Melissa Bowling, Sarah Warner. Second row: Jonathan Leung, Jeff Kuhnhenn, Meena Mohanty, Denny French, Stephen Jett, William Hill, Brent Murray, Ryan Jones, Bert Thomas. Back row: Keith Hartman, Joe Ballew, Aaron Francis, Chris Staples, Joshua Meckler, Jeff Hoagland, Sebastian Odong-Wodolam, Robby Whitlock, Peggy Lin. Absent: Shay Quillen, Paula Fugate.

Fall Uniforms Measuring Shay's Head Measuring Melissa's Head
The start of a new band year means only one thing: Digging out and preparing the uniforms for another season! To the left, Meena Mohanty and Shay Quillen attempt to sort out the replacing of buttons on the uniform coats.
The 1985 fall semester brought the promise of new tri-corner hats for the marching band, and even though future generations of band members would not be guaranteed a perfect fit, at least the current generation would have, for once, hats that fit. Sarah Warner was given the arduous task of measuring everyone's head for their new hats (seen here wrapping the tape measure around the foreheads of Shay Quillen and Melissa Bowling ... and also wondering, why would anyone want to take a picture of THIS?).

Miami of Ohio
On October 19, 1985, the band journeyed to Oxford, Ohio to participate in Miami of Ohio University's Band Day, marching in the parade and performing at the halftime ceremonies at the football game, along with 19 other bands from around the region. It was the largest crowd that the band had ever performed in front of, and their first attempt at field marching. In spite of the dreary, rainy weather, and the fact that they were announced over the loudspeakers as the "Eastern Kentucky Band," the performance did feature the debut of the spiffy new tri-corner hats! The MHS Band can be seen near the endzone in the lower lefthand corner of the field (look for Joe Ballew's white uniform).

With the Winter Concert of 1985 came the traditional "goodies in the library" reception. Here we see Mrs. Mary Lou Stephens in what would become her annual role of punch server, along with thirsty middle schoolers Jim Washabaugh and Brian Fardo.

1985 Auditorium Piano Singing
When there was some free time in band class, many band members would wander into the auditorium and bang on (excuse us, play on) the piano and sing/croon/warble/vocalize. Usually tickling the ivories were William Hill or Bert Thomas. Pictured here are Mischa Blair, Sebastain Odong-Wodolam, Meena Mohanty and Stephen Jett reacting to Shay Quillen's impassioned performance. Aaron Francis is obscured behind Shay, in the MTV jacket.

The Model High School Talent Show, held in the spring of 1986, featured a performance by The Hungry "5", consisting of Shay Quillen and Jimmy Kwak on clarinet, Stephen Jett on cornet, Josh Meckler on trombone, and Mr. Stephens on tuba (filling in for Kurt Adams who had fallen ill at the time). The quintet performed German oom-pah-pah/drinking songs and told really corny jokes before a relatively obnoxious crowd.
Here is an mp3 file of the last song performed in the set:
"Bier Hier Bier Hier (Come On with the Beer)" (1:42, mp3)
The complete performance is available in the AUDIO section.

1986 Honors Band
The first annual Madison County Honors Band was held on March 15, 1986. While only Joe Ballew managed to secure a first chair seat, a number of Model band members made the cut: Sarah Warner, Melissa Bowling, Dawn Quillen, and Pam Turner (flutes); Peggy Lin (oboe); Shay Quillen and Jimmy Kwak (clarinet); Carla Gover (alto sax); Jonathan Leung and Denny French (cornet); Josh Meckler (trombone); Kurt Adams (tuba); Keith Hartman and Chris Staples (percussion). At least our 15 band members beat Madison High School's 8 band members. The performance was directed by Dr. Robert Hartwell, then-Director of Bands at Eastern Kentucky University.

MHS at JHS
On April 8-12, 1986, members of the Model High School Band participated in a band exchange with Jefferson High School of Monroe, Michigan by making the journey up north to southern Michigan (the JHS band would reciprocate in the fall of 1986). Staying with host families (except for Sarah Warner and Melissa Bowling, who somehow got to stay at the Knight's Inn), the band members toured the area, sat in on classes at JHS, performed a joint concert with the JHS Concert and Symphonic Bands, and spent a day at Greenfield Village and the Henry Ford Museum. The band members participating (seen here outside of Jefferson High School) were:
Kneeling (L-R): Meena Mohanty, Dawn Quillen, Ranjan Mohanty
Standing (L-R): Peggy Lin, Jonathan Leung, Pam Turner (obscured), Denny French, Joe Ballew, Stephen Jett, Aaron Francis, Sebastian Odong, Chris Staples, Shay Quillen, Mischa Blair, Jimmy Kwak, Bert Thomas, Sarah Warner, Keith Hartman, Melissa Bowling, Jeff Kuhnhenn, Brent Murray, Mark Felder (JHS Band Director), Josh Meckler, Allan D.
