He left the band at the start of the spring 1985 semester. ** Mary Towers was the student assistant for the high school band class period, and occasionally joined in on percussion, so we are listing her. *** Dawn Bellis was around for the first part of the fall semester, participating in marching band only. **** Kelli Grubbs began the school year enrolled in band but dropped out later on in the semester. |
Mr. Stephens' Third Year remains, quite possibly, the most comprehensively documented year of his career. In addition to assembling the Model High School Band Yearbook, Jimmy Kwak spent the year writing articles for The Observer, the student-operated newspaper, keeping the student body updated on almost every single event involving the band. Marching performances were the primary focus of the fall 1984 semester. Recruiting seventh and eighth graders from the Middle School Band, Mr. Stephens took the Model Marching Band to four parades: The Marion County Ham Days Hogfest Pigasus Parade in Lebanon, the Jessamine Jamboree in Nicholasville, the EKU Homecoming Parade and the Richmond Holiday Parade. Lance Francis made his debut as drum major.

In April of 1985, Mr. Stephens took a small group of band students to Chicago, Illinois, to tour the city and to sit in with the Lake Forest High School Band. Band enrollment took a nice increase in this school year, with a strong incoming freshman class (most of whom would stick around for the next four years) and very few departures from the previous years, a good indication that those students that were in band were those that actually LIKED Mr. Stephens and his method of teaching band (one of the alleged reasons for the mass defections of the past two years).
