The Band Adventures 1987!
20th Anniversary Reprint Project
"'The Band Adventures' are remembered by many with great reverence, by those who remember them fondly, probably more than likely due to the fact that no one has read an actual episode in almost twenty years and are relying solely on those fond memories as the basis for their recollections; what is remembered might not be as great as what actually transpired."
JLK, April 2006.
"The Band Adventures 1986!" ran for 125 episodes from March of 1986, taking a break for the summer between May and August, and concluded in December of 1986 as one extended and very long-winded storyline. A number of plots were developed along the way, some of which were not resolved at the conclusion of the series (brought to an end due to the fact that the school semester was ending). There was no need for concern, though, because plans were already in motion to continue the series at the beginning of the spring semester of 1987. That was 20 years ago.
| Six months ago, in August of 2006, we launched "The Band Adventures 1986 20th Anniversary Reprint Project," in which we re-issued, in chronological order, the original episodes of "The Band Adventures 1986!" corresponding to the exact days, 20 years later, that they were originally issued (due to complications involving a seven day per week calendar, this resulted in the Monday through Friday series from 1986 being released on a Thursday through Tuesday schedule in 2006). Along with an exact reprint of that day's episode (errors and all), we also included commentary by JLK on the events of the episode and behind-the-scenes bits of information about the episode, and complete coverage of the infamous "Backup Pages" that were released along with that day's episode. In all, this project offered a nostalgic look back at a more innocent age, as well as piecing together, through story bits and real-life accounts, a semester of history involving the members of the Model High School Band. However, when 2006 came to a close, and "The Band Adventures 1986!" Episode #125 ended with a number of unresolved storylines, one must wonder "just how did it all end?"
| Welcome to "The Band Adventures 1987 20th Anniversary Reprint Project." We're back and we're doing it again. This re-issuing of "The Band Adventures 1987!" will run until May of 2007, as the series "officially" ended with the graduation of "Band Adventures" writer JLK from Model High School, with all of the major storylines nicely wrapped up and brought to a more or less satisfactory end. At the very least, we are doing this so that the three people who have actually kept up most of the way through the previous series can see the stories to their deserving finale.
| These episodes, while reformatted to fit today's email layouts, will be unedited and uncensored, containing all of the original typos and embarrassing unintentional (as well as intentional) errors in wordplay and inaccurate factual misrepresentations that amused and frustrated readers twenty years ago. Additionally, these episodes will be supplemented by brand new commentary by series writer JLK, with behind the scenes analysis and anecdotes on the thought processes that went into banging out these stories, and commentary by Larry O. Grand, master "Band Adventures" historian and documentarian (who also wrote a handful of these episodes).
| In addition to these episodes, we will be supplementing them, when appropriate with occasional reprints of "The Backup Pages" which were stapled to the original episodes and, at times, proved to be more popular than the actual "Band Adventures" stories that they came with. Some of these "pages" will be part of the daily reprinted episode package while others will be placed on a web page for ease of viewing.
| IMPORTANT! PLEASE NOTE THAT this series will be available ONLY via e-mail delivery by way of voluntary subscription. These episodes will NOT be reprinted anywhere else nor will they be posted on a website for later browsing. Consequently, if you subscribe for this event, you are implicitly agreeing that you will not forward these e-mails or repost them in any way on a website or other electronic means of communication, nor will you reprint or re-distribute them in any way. However, permission is granted to print out one copy for the purposes of ease of reading, as many of us, ourselves included, find it easier to read the printed page as opposed to the monitor screen. Of course, there is no way that we can prevent you from saving the e-mails to your hard drive or preserving the printed copies; we do not have a problem with that as long as you do not re-distribute them in any way.
| Why? Essentially, the same reason that "The Band Adventures" will never be made into a movie or published in the original way that it was written - because the characters involved are real people, with real first and last names, and this opens up a whole bunch of legal problems concerning use of names, misrepresentation of character, and potentially slanderous litigation. Additionally, one of the aspects of "The Band Adventures" is that the characters were, for the most part, the same as the audience, and so certain basic storytelling aspects such as characterization were largely ignored, because everybody already knew everybody and their assorted characteristics. And so, by extension of this assumption, all of the readers knew the writer(s). The point is that there are things that take place in these stories that, if they were written by a high school student TODAY, would result in their arrest and commitment to a mental institution. We would like to keep the number of readers of these stories to a select few, namely those who already KNOW the characters, the writer(s), and are likely not to take anything completely out of context. This reprinting of these stories is meant solely for the purposes of nostalgic entertainment, pure and simple, and we would like to keep it that way without getting ourselves into any more trouble than we will probably be in. Consequently, we value your privacy, and your name and email address will not be sold or traded in any way whatsoever. This mailing will not be done by an automated server or mailing list; it will be done solely by hand by an underpaid JLK Productions employee, who will individually mail out every episode every morning.
