| "We're Not Gonna Play It" performed by Central Rock Company (mp3, 2:43) | The rock combo known as Central Rock Company is joined by Allan D. Stephens on guest vocals for this parody of Twisted Sister's "We're Not Gonna Take It."
Features an assortment of our favorite "Al-isms" including "Cut off when I cut off!" and "Why aim to be mediocre?" The dialogue bit at the beginning is in reference to the time when Mr. Stephens overslept and nearly missed the band's own concert. |
| "Seacliffe Overture"
Written by James Curnow and originally commissioned by Ken Schubert, Director of the Model Lab Bands, in 1981, to be performed at his retirement in the spring of 1982. Taken from the Spring 1993 concert program: "'Mr. Schubert wanted an appropriate vehicle by which the school, the band, and George Hurst, life long friend to musicians, music students and music teachers and local music merchant ... could be remembered.' The composer James Curnow, now one of our foremost contemporary band composers, used thematic material from Mr. Hurst's Coast Artillery marching song, 'The Grand Old 53rd,' and rhythmic elements from Model's fight song to construct the piece." Tying all of these facts together is the fact that Mr. Curnow was an Associate Professor at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign at the time, and encouraged a PhD student by the name of Allan Stephens to pursue the position at Model Lab School.
Mr. Stephens' goal, upon taking the position at Model, was that the piece would be performed at least once by every generation of band students, i.e. every four years. According to our files, counting the debut performance in the spring of 1982, the band performed it again in the spring of 1986, and then seven years later in the spring of 1993.

| Fantasy on a Sea Chantey (mp3, 5:11) | Debut performance of the piece, composed by baritone player Nathan Brock, by the Model High School Band, May 13, 1993.
From the program: "This is composed Nathan Brock's first performed band work ... The 'Fantasy' is built around a well-known nautical melody. If you listen carefully you can hear it subtly interwomen within the fabric of the piece."
Taken from the radio broadcast on 1340AM.
Audio quality is fairly poor. We'll try and get a better-sounding version of this song.
An edited version of this performance can be found in the Videos Section

If you liked the music that has been presented on this page and would like to hear more, perhaps with slightly better audio quality and a greater selection, please consider making a donation. THIS IS ENTIRELY OPTIONAL and is not required for listening or downloading any of these audio files. We really don't like to ask, but bandwidth doesn't come cheap, and hosting many audio files with better sound quality would cost a lot of bandwidth. With additional bandwidth, however, we would be able to potentially feature complete performances in CD audio quality. If you do not want to donate, that's fine -- we intend to post audio over the next few weeks anyway. But we would appreciate any help. Donations of any amount can be given via the Paypal link below.
We've got a lot more stuff for you to hear. Please check back as we will be adding more content over the next few weeks!
