June 3, 2006. The Band Room. The site of the Allan D. Stephens Retirement Celebration. Students from Model Laboratory School who had been in the band under the direction of Mr. Stephens were returning from around the country to be at this one location to honor their former director. Even though the school year was over, Mr. Stephens was to come back to the band room on this Saturday morning and walk into a gathering of his former students, for a day of reunions and rekindling of old friendships.
That was the plan.
| First to arrive: Jimmy Kwak, then Neal Jett, then Kurt Adams, and then Shay Quillen and EileenGraham with Dawn and Brian Walters, and Melissa Bowling.
Joe and Susan Ballew showed up next.
The next to arrive were Paul Sirek, Jamie Farrar, Chris Staples, Susannah Roitman and Lucy Jett, Donna Pierce, and at this point we pretty much stopped keeping track. What followed was a lot of milling about The Band Room, checking out the displays and general reconnecting of friends and classmates. Sometime in the middle of all this, Susan Stephens Zarzycki departed to retrieve Mr. Stephens, the Man of the Day.

And then, Scott Zarzycki came into The Band Room, informing everyone that Mr. Stephens and Susan had arrived in the parking lot. Last minute instructions were given, the lights were doused, and everyone stood in the dark, waiting, as Mr. Stephens approached The Band Room door ...
